A smart oil tank gauge, sometimes sold as a tank monitor, is an ultrasonic sensor that threads into a spare tapping on top of your tank, in place of the plug that is sitting in it now, and reports the level to your phone, so you stop walking to the basement to squint at a float. The good ones do that well. The part nobody explains is what they actually measure, which is why a freshly filled tank often just says "Full" instead of giving you a number.

They measure the empty space, not the oil

An ultrasonic gauge sits at the top of the tank and sends a sound pulse straight down. The pulse bounces off the surface of the oil and comes back, and the sensor times the round trip. That timing gives the distance down to the oil, in other words the size of the air gap above it. The gauge then subtracts that gap from the height of your tank and converts what is left into gallons.

This is worth understanding because it explains every quirk these devices have. The sensor never touches the oil and never measures it directly. It measures headroom, and infers the rest from the tank size you told it during setup. Tell it the wrong tank and every reading is wrong, in exactly the way that reading a 330 against a 275 chart is wrong.

The blind spot at the top of the tank

When the tank is nearly full, the oil surface climbs close to the sensor. Smart Oil Gauge's own documentation is straightforward about the consequence: when a tank is filled, the oil is often too close to the ultrasonic sensor for a reliable reading, so the gauge reports "Full" rather than a figure.

That sounds like a flaw, and in fairness it is a real limit. But the top few inches of a tank are the least useful inches you own, for reasons this site spends a lot of time on:

The practical upshot. Judge a smart gauge on how well it tracks the bottom half of the tank, not on whether it can resolve a brim-full one. If you want the exact gallons in a full tank, the metered ticket from the delivery is the honest number.

Two kinds, solving two different problems

Almost everything sold to homeowners is one of two designs. Both use ultrasound at the tank; the difference is where the reading goes.

Either way, what you do with the reading is the same arithmetic, and none of it needs a gauge to work. A stick and those two pages cost nothing. What you are paying for is not having to go down and look.

The choice is mostly about whether you want the number on your phone when you are not home. A connected gauge earns its keep if you travel, run a rental, or watch a second property. A local receiver is simpler, has almost nothing to go wrong, and its transmitter battery is rated past ten years, but it only tells you something when you are standing in front of it.

Will it work on your tank?

Above-ground tanks only. A buried tank cannot use one of these. The sensor mounts in a tapping on top of the tank and needs clear air above the oil to work. On a buried tank the top of the shell is under the ground and your only access is the fill pipe, so there is nowhere to put it. Read a buried tank with a stick down the fill pipe, or with a remote gauge like a Petrometer, which was designed for exactly that problem.
Do not install one on a dual tank setup that shares a single fill and vent. Where two tanks are piped together and only the primary carries the fill and the vent, the tappings are not always doing the job they appear to be doing, and a gauge sitting on one tank cannot tell you what the pair is holding. Getting that wrong surfaces during a delivery, which is the worst possible time to find out. If you are not certain how your tanks are piped, have your oil company or a licensed technician do the install, or at minimum have them inspect it before any oil is delivered to the tank.

What to check before you buy

Installing a gauge means pulling a plug out of a tank holding oil and oil vapor. If the tapping is in use, the tank is old or tight, you run a linked pair of tanks, or you are not certain which tapping is which, that is a job for your oil company rather than a Saturday afternoon. Either way, have the installation looked at before the next delivery rather than after it.

Common questions

Is a WiFi oil gauge more accurate than my float gauge?

For the range you actually care about, generally yes: a float gauge is a coarse fraction, while an ultrasonic gauge reports a level and a gallon estimate and logs it over time. The exception is a brim-full tank, where the oil sits too close to the sensor and the reading gives way to "Full". Neither device beats a stick reading converted on the chart for your tank.

Why does it say Full right after a delivery?

Because the oil surface is too close to the sensor for a clean echo, so the gauge reports Full instead of guessing. It resolves into a number as you burn down the first few inches. The gallons you were charged are on the delivery ticket.

I have two tanks piped together. Can I install one?

Not on your own, and in the common setup where the pair shares one fill and one vent on the primary tank, you should not install one at all. A gauge reads the tank it is mounted on, which is not the same as what the pair is holding, and in tanks piped together the tappings are not always serving the purpose they appear to. The consequences show up during a delivery, so have your oil company or a licensed technician handle the install, or inspect it before any oil goes in.

Does it work if my tank is buried?

No. These sensors mount in a tapping on top of the tank and need clear air space above the oil, and a buried tank offers neither: the top of the shell is under the ground and the only way in is the fill pipe. Buried tanks are read with a stick down the fill pipe, or with a remote gauge like a Petrometer, which puts the readout indoors and the sensing end in the tank. If your tank is underground, this whole category is the wrong product.

What happens to the readings if my internet goes down?

A connected gauge cannot report while the WiFi is out, though it resumes when the connection returns. That is precisely the tradeoff a local radio receiver avoids: it keeps displaying because it never depended on the internet in the first place.

Do I still need to know my tank size?

Yes, and it matters more than people expect. The gauge measures the air gap and converts using the tank size you configure, so an incorrect setting skews every reading. If you are unsure, work through what size is my oil tank first.
